WING CHUN KUEN HISTORY

The following notes summarize the history of Wing Chun Kuen. Please consider, the early history has been transmitted orally through many generations and should not be considered absolute. Wing Chun Kuen appeared in the third generation of the Precious Jade Flower Union (mid 1800's).

    RED JUNK OPERA COMAPANY

Cheung Ng (Zhang Wu), a.k.a. "Tan Sao Ng", the "Great Teacher" of modern Cantonese Opera, trained in Beijing Opera (allegedly trained Shaolin martial arts under the guidance of Shaolin disciple, Yat Chum), organized the red junk opera performers (operatic professionals were known as "Disciples of the Pearl Garden") into the association known as the "Precious Jade Flower Union" or "Red Flower Union" (1730’s). Cheung Ng taught the traditional Eighteen Plays of River & Lake and opera-oriented martial arts. A-Hua, succeeded Cheung Ng as the second leader of the Precious Jade Flower Union (the first few decades of the 19th century), followed by, Li Wenmao of Heshan. It was during the time of Li Wenmao that Wing Chun Kuen (Yongchunquan) was introduced into the Precious Jade Flower Union. The Precious Jade Flower Union prospered until 1855, when Governor-General (of Guangdong and Guangxi; Liangguang), Yip Ming-Chan (Ye Mingchen) branded the Precious Jade Flower Union members extortionists and threats to public morality. Their actors were killed, their hall and theaters were burned down, and performances of Cantonese Opera were outlawed.

The Precious Jade Flower Union opera performers under the leadership of Li Wenmao:

  • Wong Wah-Bo (Huang Huabao): said to have been a native of Gulao (Koolo), Heshan (Hoksan); considered the senior of the troupe, he played the male martial lead, and was particularly skilled in the roles of General Kwan and the Monkey King, and in the use of the kwun (pole).
  • Leung Yee-Tai (Liang Erdi): played the 'female' martial lead.
  • Dai Fa Min Kam (Dahuamian Jin; Painted Face Kam), also known as San Kam (Xin Jin; New Kam), and sometimes said to have properly been Lok Kam (Luo Jin) of Kamjuk (Jinju), Saamshui (Sanshui): played the martial painted face.
  • Yik Kam (Yijin; Wing Gold): played the proper 'female', a virtuous leading role.
  • Lai Fook-Shun (Li Fushun), also known as Siu Fook (Xiao Fu; Young Fook): played the young male, the beardless scholar-lover.
  • Cho Shun (Cao Shun), known as Dai Ngan Shun (Dayan Shun; Cross-eyed Shun), a native of Panyu (Poon Yee): played the little martial, and was a disciple of Yik Kam (Yijin; Wing Gold).
  • Others, including Leung Lan-Kwai (Liang Langui), Go Lo Chung (Gaolao Zheng; Tall Chung), Fa Jee Ming (Huazi Ming; Flower Mark Ming), Fa Min Biu (Huamian Biao; Flower Face Biu), etc.

    Nathan,

Saw you in the park yesterday!

This is good but most is not verifiable.

We know Red Boat opera existed and Tan Sao Ng was real, he started the Opera but probably didn't do Wing Chun.

Several generations later we can find Wong Wa Bo and Lueng Yii Tai in written records, everything else is speculation.

Many of the stories written about match many of the Kung Fu legends from earlier times and different regions.

Complete Wing Chun is good; Follow up with Rene Ritchie and Hedrick Santo for alternate views.

I am looking at a White Crane - Eimi Mountain Snake hybrid as a model for our system based off of various conversations with those who do realistic historical research.

    Thank you, Dave!

These notes are so bare! Originally, I had no intention of sharing them. My research was only to give myself a feeling for the various perspectives on Wing Chun history. I collected the information from a variety of sources and I believe Rene Ritchie was among them (www.wingchunkuen.com). I also looked into the stories and martial arts systems associated with Ng Mui (White Crane, Wu Mei Pai, etc). I realize the majority of the content is only folk legend, but I enjoy that because it let's my imagination fill in the gaps... like reading a fiction novel.

By the way, we're usually in that park Mondays and Fridays... you and anyone from your group are welcome to join us! =)

Usually around 6:00pm, but our schedules make it difficult for us to have consistent meeting times... Monday at 6pm is probably the most consistent. ...but I usually call everyone or send email or text message to confirm other are interested in training. If you or your students wanted to be there I would certainly be there!
